GCC presents Elana Johnson

Phew. I’ve just got back from Voices on the Coast festival where I got to meet so many amazing authors, students and librarians. I talked myself hoarse and I’m pretty sure that far too many students are now handing in author essays that begin, Amanda Ashby hates bananas and watches too much television…

But I digress. Today I’m touring the lovely Elana Johnson and her new book Surrender, which follows her first book, Possession. She is the author of From the Query to the Call, an ebook that every writer needs to read before they query, which can be downloaded for free on her website. She runs a personal blog on publishing and is a founding author of the QueryTracker blog. She blogs regularly at The League of Extraordinary Writers, co-organizes WriteOnCon, and can be found on Twitter and Facebook. She wishes she could experience her first kiss again, tell the mean girl where to shove it, and have cool superpowers like reading minds and controlling fire. To fulfill her desires, she writes young adult science fiction and fantasy.

Surrender:

Raine has always been a good girl. She lives by the rules in Freedom. After all, they are her father’s rules: He’s the Director. It’s because of him that Raine is willing to use her talent—a power so dangerous, no one else is allowed to know about it. Not even her roommate, Vi. All of that changes when Raine falls for Gunner. Raine’s got every reason in the world to stay away from Gunn, but she just can’t. Especially when she discovers his connection to Vi’s boyfriend, Zenn. Raine has never known anyone as heavily brainwashed as Vi. Raine’s father expects her to spy on Vi and report back to him. But Raine is beginning to wonder what Vi knows that her father is so anxious to keep hidden, and what might happen if she helps Vi remember it. She’s even starting to suspect Vi’s secrets might involve Freedom’s newest prisoner, the rebel Jag Barque….

1 How did you come up with the idea for this book?

Well, I was sort of forced to. It’s the second book in a series that wasn’t intended to be a series. So when I was discussing my next project with my agent/editor, I had to come up with the concept for this book.

2 What’s been your favorite author moment so far in your career? ‘

The launch party for POSSESSION. Every author should have a launch party, because they are the shiniest moments of all, where you’re surrounded by everyone who loves you.

3 It’s Oscar speech time! Who are the three people that you would most like to thank for helping you write this book?

My agent Michelle Andelman is intregal in my writing process. My husband Adam, because he helps with the kids and picks up the slack when I’m at the library writing. And Christine Fonseca, who listens to me vent on a pretty daily basis.

4 Describe a typical writing day.

Um, I don’t have “writing” days. I have days where I teach and run the kids around and squeeze writing into ten-minute blocks. If I’m lucky, I’ll have 1-2 hours to go to the library while my daughter has dance. Other than that, I’m swamped into my day job and family.

5 Tell me one strange random fact about this book.

SURRENDER took 3 months to outline, and 25 days to draft. Next time, I’m just going to draft the book first and outline it second!

You Had Me at Halo Kindle for 99 cents

Just a reminder that  my debut book You Had Me at Halo is now up on Kindle for 99 cents. I actually wrote this book three weeks after my own father died so it was a strange but therapeutic way for me to deal with his death and explore what might happen next. Holly… Read More

Revisions

I’ve just finished the revisions for Sophie’s Mixed-Up Magic book three, and this is definitely my favorite one in the series. Not only does it contain a flying carpet (and let’s be honest, wouldn’t we all kill for a flying carpet) but Sophie also ends up learning how to become invisible. Anyway, as promised, I… Read More
